Republicans Offered More Choices Than Democrats

As Kootenai County voters head to the polls for today’s primary election, they’ll be asked to make a bevy of choices.

Unless, of course, they’re Democrats.

Democrats will decide only two contested races today while Republicans will decide five, six or seven, depending on the district in which they reside.

Republicans in all three of the county’s legislative districts will choose among:

Three presidential candidates;

Two U.S. representative candidates;

Three county commission candidates;

Three sheriff candidates; and

Two county clerk candidates.

In addition, voters in District 3 will choose between two candidates for state representative. District 2 voters will choose among three state Senate candidates and between two state House candidates.

Democrats, meanwhile, will make only a pair of choices. Two Democrats are vying for U.S. representative and two are competing to be county clerk.

Voters from each party will see many uncontested primary races, including U.S. senator, one county commissioner seat, prosecuting attorney and three judges.

While voter turnout is not expected to be high, Kootenai County has a record 55,000 voters registered. Registration is allowed at the polls but will take extra time.
