Tom Hunt Chosen For Mead School Board

Jonathan Martin Staff Writer

Tom Hunt brings 15 years of corporate management experience to the Mead School Board.

The 42-year-old Washington State University graduate is vice president of operations for Murphey Favre, the investment securities company.

The board picked Hunt last week over three other candidates, including a Gonzaga University psychology professor and a housewife.

With a pair of children in Colbert Elementary School, Hunt decided to move from coaching youth sports teams and classroom volunteering into the school district headquarters.

He grew up in Forks, Wash., near the rain forests of the Olympic National Park. He graduated from Washington State University in 1981, was hired by Murphey Favre, and quickly rose to top management.

Hunt is the second new appointment on Mead’s board in six months. Prior to Frank Hoover’s appointment in November, the board remained unchanged for eight years.

“There is no doubt we will have some different perspectives,” said Hunt, whose wife is a teacher in the Riverside School District.

Hunt likes what he sees now, calling the district “very well administered.” He expects the introduction of a second district high school in 1997 will require difficult decisions.

He declined to discuss hot-button education issues, including state-mandated efforts to reform public school curriculum. “Those are team decisions. It would be wise to wait and talk to the other board members,” said Hunt.
