Gsl At A Glance

G-Prep 16, North Central 7

Key play

After stopping Prep on the first series of the third quarter in a 10-7 game, NC sophomore quarterback Nick Froscheiser threw the ball right to Tom Black of the Bullpups, who returned it 19 yards to the 10, setting up an easy touchdown.

Star of the game

When Gonzaga Prep’s running game was shut down, Bullpups quarterback Kevin O’Connell stepped up and hit 6 of 7 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

Notable

Looking at history, the first-half stats seemed backward. Prep struggled with the run with Tyson Thielman, who a week after going for 290 yards was held to 6 yards on 11 carries. The team had 13 yards but O’Connell saved the offense. NC ran for 156 yards but had minus-5 yards passing… . Prep, after going ahead 16-7 early in the third quarter, could have broken the game open following a blocked punt by Shane Hartnett. However, Hartnett piled on the punter at the NC 30, making it first-and-25. The Bullpups got a motion penalty, had a long completion called back by having a lineman downfield and then threw an interception… . NC was without quarterback Mike Caballero, who had to sit out a game after being ejected the previous week… . Issac Carter started his second game at middle linebacker for NC. He began the season as the starter for Ferris but was injured in the first game and left the school for personal reasons… . NC hasn’t beaten Prep since 1991; prior to that it was 1997.

Next opponent

Prep plays Lewis and Clark in the 7:30 game at Albi on Thursday; NC closes the regular season with Friday’s 8:30 game against Shadle Park at Albi.

Shadle Park 49, University 21

Key play

The Highlanders scored on their first possession and then Kris Walters picked off Rob Barlett, returning the interception 29 yards to set up a 9-yard field. Shadle took advantage to open a 12-0 lead with 3:36 left in the first quarter, forcing U-Hi to play catchup all night.

Star of the game

Everyone in Shadle’s four-man backfield made big contributions but Jeff Lafferty ended up with 176 yards and two TDs.

Notable

Going into tonight’s Central Valley-Lewis and Clark game, Shadle Park needs LC to lose to try to clinch second place, but an LC win would clinch a spot for G-Prep. … University was without Jason Berger, the No. 2 receiver in the league. Berger will also miss the last game after being knocked unconscious a week ago. Berger had 30 catches; his replacement, Jake Roberts had just two entering the game… . Shadle Park, with its wing-T offense, got touchdowns from all four players in the backfield in rolling to a 34-7 lead. Walters and Laferty added a second TD apiece. … Shadle’s Tim Snell got his score on a short TD run but it was set up by his 56-yard pass reception. … U-Hi scored two TDs quickly in the third quarter to close the gap to 34-21 but two plays later, Lafferty ripped off a 61-yard run, setting up his second score.

Next opponent

University plays Rogers in Friday’s 5:45 Albi game; Shadle follows against NC.
