Junior League Of Spokane Tees Up For Golf Exhibition

Nancy Slack Correspondent

Members of the Junior League of Spokane are already gearing up for their eighth golf exhibition on Sept. 15, 1997. Since 1971, the event has allowed the league to put more than $1 million into the Spokane community through its programs and projects.

“This exhibition is a full-day event with four top-name professional golfers providing a clinic for about 800 people, a luncheon with the golfers and an 18-hole exhibition for a gallery of 3,000,” said Jan House, golf committee chairwoman. “It’s a day of fun for golfers and gallery alike, but it also provides funding for four years of league projects.”

Exhibition golfers, to be announced Nov. 12, promise to be as exciting as those who played in 1993: Chip Beck, Fred Couples, Nancy Lopez and Nick Price.

Sponsorships and advertisements are available, ranging from $250 to $10,000. Sponsorships include a limited number of holes at $5,000, products ranging from $2,500 to $10,000, and $10,000 for the lunch. Tickets go on sale next March 17.

Junior League projects for 1996-97 include providing evening enrichment programs for Ogden Hall residents; Teen Career Connection, a program linking teens with business people in job-shadowing environments; Kids on the Block, a puppetry program of physically and developmentally challenged puppets that teaches children about peoples’ differences; and Impact Spokane, a series of done-in-a-day projects that meet immediate community needs.

In addition, Junior League Foster Families has three projects: Foster Santa, a breakfast with Santa with toys and gifts; the Speakers’ Bureau Committee addresses community awareness; and the Resource Center and Database Committee develops and maintains a list of needs of foster families and a correlating list of available resources.

Make-A-Wish Foundation of Washington State will receive more than $10,000 in 1997 from a “Hair-Raising,” fund-raising campaign at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla. Seven penitentiary employees - five men and two women - collected pledges and shaved their heads during the Oct. 23 event.

“These employees realized that many kids don’t have a choice about losing their hair,” said Judy Rogers, Spokane director of Make-A-Wish. “They made the choice to shave their heads supporting children with life-threatening illnesses - the mission of Make-A-Wish.”
