Boy Accidentally Shoots, Kills Dad

A 4-year-old boy who found a gun in a closet accidentally shot and killed his father as the man was taking a nap Sunday, police said.

James Joseph Pettacio, 46, was asleep in his living room. His son wandered into a bedroom and found his semi-automatic pistol in the closet, police said.

The boy brought the gun into the living room and began playing with it, the Lee County sheriff’s office said. The gun fired, shooting a bullet into Pettacio’s back.

The father crawled to the phone to call 911 but died at the house.
