Mexican Rebel Group Declares Truce For Vote

Compiled From Wire Services

The newly emerged Popular Revolutionary Army has declared a unilateral truce for Sunday’s elections in the state of Mexico, the la Jornada newspaper reported Tuesday.

The truce is to extend from Tuesday through Nov. 17, the paper said, citing a rebel communique.

At least two attacks in the state, which borders Mexico City, widely have been attributed to the EPR, as the group is known by its Spanish initials. Three policemen and soldiers have been reported killed.

At stake in Sunday’s elections are 122 mayoralties and the 75-seat local Congress. Mexico state is home to 12 million people.

The EPR also declared a truce for elections last month in Guerrero.
