Baby Seal Taken Home, Back To Beach

A woman who brought a baby seal home because she thought it had been abandoned was bitten in the cheek by the pup, authorities said.

Jeanne Layton, 42, was not seriously injured, police said.

Layton was walking along the waterfront here late Tuesday night when she found the animal.

Fearing it had been abandoned or orphaned, she brought the 2-foot-long baby home and left it in her bathtub while she telephoned for help.

At some point, the pup bit her, police said.

State Fish and Wildlife Department officials brought the seal back to where it was found.

Never touch a baby seal, as mothers leave their pups ashore for hours at a time while they hunt for food, department spokesman Sgt. Larry Baker said.
