Big West coaches have higher hopes for the Idaho men’s basketball team than media who cover the conference, according to preseason polls released Wednesday.
Coaches picked Idaho to finish fourth in the Eastern Division. Media tabbed Idaho for last (sixth) place.
There was consensus on Idaho’s women, who open with an exhibition game Friday night in Moscow. Both polls forecast Idaho for last place.
Utah State’s men were favored in the Eastern Division by the media. The coaches went with New Mexico State. Boise State was fifth according to the coaches and voted fourth by the media.
Long Beach State was tabbed by the media to win the Western Division. The coaches disagreed, choosing Pacific.
On the women’s side, the media chose New Mexico State to win the Eastern Division and the coaches sided with Nevada. Both polls unanimously predict UC-Santa Barbara will take the Western Division.
Idaho, Boise State, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and North Texas are new Big West members. There are 12 men’s teams and 11 women’s squads (Utah State doesn’t sponsor a team).
