Lewis and Clark girls know the route to success during fall sports seasons: Join the volleyball team.
One move by Jamie Borgan assured that LC’s “other” girls fall sport would share the spotlight with the volleyball team.
Borgan’s fourth-place finish at last Saturday’s Region IV-AAA meet led LC to its first berth in a state cross country meet since 1986.
This Saturday, while LC’s volleyball team aims for another state berth, the young cross country team will catch its first glance of Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Borgan, who made a name for herself during two previous track and field seasons, spent past falls with LC’s freshman and junior varsity volleyball teams. She switched this fall, sensing that her volleyball skills would always be limited.
With freshmen Emily Fuller and Mindy Noble, and the return of injured sophomore Kim Rosenquist - daughter of elite runner Kim Jones - LC placed four runners in the top 21 at region. The other Tigers, Sara LarsenCooper, Corey Mullen and Madeleine Haag, are also underclassmen.
“I think everyone’s planning on coming back next year,” Borgan said. “We thought there was a chance (to make state) if we all had good races at region, but we weren’t expecting to beat every GSL team.” , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
