Sandpoint Names Givens High School Baseball Coach

THURSDAY, NOV. 7, 1996

Sandpoint has named Mike Givens as head baseball coach.

Givens replaces Dave Martinez, who resigned to take a job outside of coaching in the Yakima, Wash., area. He becomes the fourth coach in six years at Sandpoint.

He was a head coach at Half Moon High near San Francisco for four years and also coached four years at Skyline Community College in San Bruno, Calif.

Givens teaches at Priest River Junior High. He coached the junior varsity team at Sandpoint in 1995 and also coached the American Legion team that summer.

He was one of four finalists. Others interviewed were: Rick Klontz, former Sandpoint American Legion coach; Sandpoint assistant coach Al Beard; and Tracy Turrell, who served as Coeur d’Alene American Legion interim coach last summer.

North Star League volleyball coaches have selected their all-league team.

Named to the team are: junior Katie Elwood of Mullan; junior Meghann Jenkins of Falls Christian; seniors Harmony Hammons, Alecia Hoffman and Angela Flint of Lakeside; seniors Danyel Hunter and Jamie Bornitz of Kootenai; and freshmen Jennifer Derr and Katie Hess and junior Erin Manderscheid of Clark Fork.
