Chewelah Wraps Up Nea Crown

Luke Sheppard rushed for 146 yards on 11 carries, including a 19-yard touchdown run, and Cody Katzer ran for 94 yards and two TDs to lead the Chewelah Cougars to a 26-7 win over the Colfax Bulldogs Friday night at Chewelah.

Fifth-ranked Chewelah (7-0, 9-0) won the Northeast A League title with an undefeated record for the second consecutive year.

Chewelah will play host to Quincy, the No. 3 seed from the Caribou Trail League in the first round of the state playoffs.

Colfax (5-2, 6-3) needed a victory to make the playoffs.

Lakeside 40, Deer Park 14

Five different players scored touchdowns as the Eagles (6-1, 6-3) cruised past the Stags (1-6, 1-8) and into the playoffs.

George Petticrew passed for a pair of touchdowns as Lakeside earned the No.2 seed from the NEA league.

Randy Brownell set the tone for the game when he returned an interception 33 yards for a TD in the Eagles’ 19-point first quarter.

Petticrew connected with Jason Christen for a 22-yard touchdown and then hooked up with Adam Cummings from 32 yards out to complete the first-quarter scoring.

A 5-yard TD run by Jason Downie and an 8-yard TD run by Tai Saito in the third quarter put the game out of reach.

Freeman 23, Newport 14

Matt Smith passed for 137 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Scotties (3-4, 3-6) to a win over the visiting Grizzlies (2-5, 2-7).

Brandon Miller’s 8-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter sealed the win for Freeman.

Frontier League

Colville 20, Riverside 14

The Indians (3-3, 4-5) outscored the host Rams 20-0 in the second half to keep Riverside (0-6, 2-7) winless in its second year in the Frontier League.

Brady Noble ran for two final-period touchdowns to spark the comeback.
