Angry Othello Star Takes It Out On Wv

Superman has nothing on Othello’s Carrie Redding.

At least when it comes to that faster-than-a-speeding-bullet stuff.

Redding capped a two-goal burst late in the first half and the Huskies went on to edge West Valley 2-1 Saturday at Millwood Elementary school in the first round of the state AA girls soccer tournament.

Eagles coach Dirk Linton was impressed.

“I haven’t seen a forward as fast as (Redding) the whole season,” he said.”Overall they’re a very quick team, but she’s something else.”

Going into the match Othello coach Bernie Garza was expecting big things from Redding, the Mid-Valley League’s leading goal-scorer.

“She’s been shut out the past two games,” he said. “And she’s very angry about that.”

After the game Garza was all smiles.

“I knew she’d play a great game,” Garza said. “She was knocked down, pushed down, but she got back up and hit the game-winner.”

West Valley jumped out to a 1-0 lead 19 minutes into the game on a header by Dawn Salfer off a Keisha Sower lob kick.

The goal was a blessing in disguise for the Huskies because West Valley began playing tentatively.

“I think it was mental,” Linton said. “Especially after we got the first goal. We were just goofing off out there for a while after that.”

Othello knotted the score at the 34-minute mark with an easy goal. Eagles goalkeeper Stacey Roberts got tangled up with Redding and the two fell to the ground, leaving the net wide open for Becky Rogers’ goal.

Two minutes later, Redding scored the gamewinner when her kick stayed inside the left post. Linton said it was the first time Roberts had been beaten to the near post all season.

West Valley ends its season with a 14-4-2 mark. Othello (17-3) will be at top-seeded West Valley of Yakima next Saturday in the quarterfinals.
