Small Binoculars Big On Performance

Bryan Chitwood Special To Outdoors

Product: Nikon Mountaineer Waterproof Binoculars

Description: Compact, high-quality waterproof center-focus binoculars available in 8x23 and 10x25 models all-metal, rubber-armored shockproof construction; 100 percent waterproof/fogproof; nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed; multi-coated optics.

Pro: Light and compact enough to be backpacked or carried on mountaineering trips (14.9 oz., 4-by-4.5 inches in the 8x23 model), these rugged units are ideal for canoeing, kayaking, sailing, ski touring or anywhere you’d worry abou carrying fine optics guaranteed immersion and fog proof. The center focusing ring is quick and sure, there’s long-eye relief for eyeglasses wearers, they’ll focus down to nine feet and there’s a diopter locking system. The optics are outstanding.

Con: Life is full of compromises, and compact binoculars by design must compromise somewhere. The second number in binocular descriptions (as in 8x23, where 8 represents the magnification) describes the light-gathering capabilities of the “glass.” Marine binoculars, for example, are generally 7x50, which gives decent magnification with excellent light-gathering for low-light performance …in an admittedly bulky package. If the Mountaineers have a flaw, it’s simply that their low-light performance can’t match that found in larger packages. Also, lots of folks may find it difficult to hold a 10-power binocular steady most of us can get by with the 8 powers. The only other drawback is that Nikon’s not giving them away.

Comments: For those whose paramount concern is weight, bulk and quality, the answer to the above concerns is “Who cares?” The optical clarity of these compact units is sharp enough to draw blood. They’re ruggedly constructed and ready to serve regardless of the conditions. Incredible performance in a compact package.

Price: Nikon’s suggested retail price is $481 for the 10x23 and $445 for the 8x23…BUT it’s a cold day in a very hot place when you can’t find most binoculars and cameras deeply discounted. Look for a street price of $300-$350 for the 8x23, and treat them like family.
