Stankowski Hangs On

Paul Stankowski birdied the final hole and held off Fred Couples to win the Kapalua International by one stroke at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Stankowski, who held a one stroke lead starting the final round, finished with a 72-hole total of 269, 21-under.

Jay Sigel’s steady play led to his first major victory, a two-stroke decision over Yakima native Kermit Zarley in the Senior Tour Championship at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Sigel shot a 72 and finished at 9-under 279. Defending champion Jim Colbert birdied the final hole to win the season’s money race with a record total of $1,627,890.

South Africa’s Ernie Els parred the first playoff hole against Ian Woosnam of Wales and won the $100,000 first prize in the four-country, eight-player Johnnie Walker Super Tour at Bangkok, Thailand.

Two-time defending champion Laura Davies mastered the difficult Great Island Club course with a 6-under 66 to win the Itoen Ladies at Chosei, Japan, by 15 strokes.
