Minnesota’s Wacker Resigns

Compiled From Wire Services

Jim Wacker, who took over the football program at Minnesota five years ago, resigned as head coach in the wake of six straight Big Ten Conference losses.

His resignation leaves the Big Ten with four football coaching jobs to fill, following changes at Indiana, Illinois and Purdue.

The Golden Gophers are 3-6 this season after a perfect non-conference start. The last four Big Ten losses were by a combined score of 161-47. With two games remaining, Wacker is 15-38 since taking over in 1992.

New Mexico State coach Jim Hess was fired just four years after leading the Aggies to their first winning season in 14 years.

The Aggies are 1-9 this season and 0-4 in the Big West Conference heading into Saturday’s final game against Boise State. Hess’ firing is effective after Saturday’s game.
