Aa/A/B Postseason Football Games

Mike Vlahovich And Chris Derrick

Class AA

West Valley-Yakima (8-0) at Pullman (7-2), 7:30 p.m. Friday: Mid-Valley team West Valley is ranked third in state and is making its 11th trip in 12 years to the State AA playoffs.

The predominantly power-running game is a product of 6-2, 200-pound quarterback-defensive back Ryan Allen; 6-2, 215-pound tailback-defensive end Ricky Rico; 6-2, 205-pound fullback-linebacker Chris Thornton and 6-2, 225-pound tight end-defensive end Kyle Delorme.

Pullman won its first Frontier League title since 1991 and will counter WV-Yakima’s size with speed and finesse.

Quarterback Aaron Linehan completed 133 of 230 passes for 1,968 yards and 23 touchdowns. Receiver Forest Hurlbert has 65 catches for 1,020 yards and 11 TDs. Cole Sheridan rushed for 709 yards and 6 TDs.

Edge: West Valley

East Valley-Spokane (5-4) at Prosser (8-0), 7:30 p.m. Friday: The host Mustangs, who finished second in the AA finals last year, are ranked second in state again.

Quarterback Benji Sonnichson has completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,808 yards and 16 touchdowns. His targets are 6-5 Shawn Van Winkle (24 catches, 350 yards and 10 TDs), 6-3 Dan Marchant (29 catches, 570 yards) and 5-6 Jeremy Santo (20 catches for 300 yards). Running back Shane Vasile has gained 860 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. They are protected up front by 6-2, 270-pound Marcus Hall, 6-5, 270-pound Josh Jelinek and 5-10, 225-pound Chad Karthauser.

East Valley’s last playoff appearance was in 1991, the year Pullman last won the league. Jim Clements was the Greyhounds coach and was host to WV-Yakima. EV traveled to Prosser. Clements is now the Knights coach.

The Knights’ Wing-T is led by transfers Tristan Beeman and Rob Gillespie, who combined for nearly 1,200 rushing yards. Receiver Trevor Eastman has caught 50 passes for 750 yards and 11 touchdowns.

They, along with linemen Paul Shogren, Ryan Stengle, T.J. Horgan and linebackers Charles Van Note and Rusty Ruchert have been defensive mainstays.

Edge: Prosser.

Class A

Quincy (7-2) at Chewelah (9-0), 1:30 p.m. Saturday: The last time Quincy met an unbeaten Northeast A League team - 1994 against Riverside - the Jackrabbits pulled the surprise.

Chewelah appears too balanced for such a repeat. The fourth-ranked Cougars have Dan Macrae, a three-year starter at QB, bruising RBs Cody Katzer and Luke Sheppard, and a stingy defense that has allowed less than eight points per game. Chewelah is 20-1 under coach Roy Albertson.

Edge: Chewelah

Lakeside (6-3) at Zillah (7-2), 7:30 p.m. Friday: Lakeside, making its third straight playoff appearance, hopes to sidestep last year’s first-round 54-27 loss to Zillah. The Eagles rely on their rushing game and defense, which features 6-2, 225-pound linebacker Randy Brownell, maybe the best two-way player in Class A. The recent return of QB George Petticrew, who broke his hand in the Eagles’ first game, should provide a lift.

Zillah’s option attack centers around Jeremy Schuoler (1,162 yards, 13 TDs) and Josh Whitaker (884, 15). The Leopards were ranked No. 1 all year until ending the regular season with two losses.

Edge: Zillah

Class B-11

Oroville (8-1) at Davenport (7-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday: Expect the rushing yards to pile up when Oroville pays a visit to Davenport in a premier B-11 state-qualifying game.

Sixth-ranked Oroville features 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior running back Braxton Cleman, who averages 9.3 yards per carry. Cleman just missed the 1,300-yard level this season.

Davenport, ranked fourth, uses the 1-2 punch of senior Josh FitzPatrick and junior Travis Telecky. The two have combined for nearly 1,600 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground.

Davenport squeaked past Oroville 28-23 in last year’s semifinals before winning the state title.

Edge: Davenport

Reardan (7-2) vs. DeSales (8-1) at Kennewick, 7 p.m. Friday: Sophomore Brian Lindgren of eighth-ranked DeSales leads state quarterbacks, in all classifications, with 35 TD passes and 3,042 yards. He showed his youthful vulnerability last Friday, however, with six interceptions in a loss to Waitsburg.

Reardan, led by senior RB Travis Titchenal and senior QB Nate Graham, bounced back from a midseason loss to Wilbur-Creston to earn the Northeast’s No. 3 berth. Seventh-ranked Reardan still smarts from a 21-8 first-round loss to Manson last year.

Edge: DeSales

Mabton (7-2) at Republic (9-0), 3 p.m. Saturday: Ramiro Maldonado of 10th-ranked Mabton finished No. 3 among B-11 rushers, 5 yards shy of Oroville’s Braxton Cleman. He has scored 13 TDs. QB Calvin Hugie averaged less than six pass attempts per game.

Second-ranked Republic, knocked out of last year’s first round 30-27 by Tekoa-Oakesdale, has the superior passing game and defense. Senior QB Jason Baldwin has thrown for 1,789 yards, 28 TDs and just four interceptions. Senior Mark Rickard averages 22 yards per catch, has scored a B-11-best 142 points and has 29 career interceptions.

Edge: Republic
