Another Crash Victim Identified

Associated Press

The remains of another victim of the crash of TWA Flight 800 have been recovered and positively identified, the medical examiner’s office announced Thursday.

A forensic radiologist identified the remains through the use of X-rays, the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office said. The family of the victim has requested that the name not be released, the office said.

The remains were recovered last week when investigators began dredging with scallop boats to scoop up pieces of the plane that had been buried in the ocean floor. It was only the second time in the past two months that human remains have been found.

The discovery raises to 215 the number of victims’ remains received by the medical examiner’s office.

The Paris-bound flight crashed on July 17 off Long Island shortly after taking off from Kennedy International Airport, killing all 230 aboard.

The National Transportation Safety Board is trying to determine whether the aircraft’s center fuel tank blew up because of a mechanical malfunction, a missile or a bomb.
