Hoch, Beck Take Lead Thousand

Compiled From Wire Services

Scott Hoch, playing in the Franklin Templeton Shark Shootout for the first time, knocked in a 30-foot chip on the 16th hole as he and teammate Chip Beck shared the first-round lead in the $1.1 million event.

Hoch and Beck combined for a 6-under-par 66, playing an alternate shot format.

Curtis Strange and Mark O’Meara, who teamed to win the inaugural Shark Shootout in 1989 but haven’t won the title since, also had a 66 to open the 1996 renewal at Sherwood Country Club.
