UI Women Enjoy Gifts From Alumni In 100-73 Victory

No need to hit up the University of Idaho alumni women’s basketball players for donations to the current Vandals team.

The grads were overwhelmingly charitable on Saturday night as 43 turnovers led to numerous UI points and a 100-73 exhibition runaway at Memorial Gym.

Reserve forward Kathryn Gussett had 11 first-half points. Freshman forward Alli Nieman, from Sandpoint, finished with 21 points, 11 from the foul line. Susan Woolf (5), Ari Skorpik (1) and Kelli Johnson (2) and Jill Ortner (2) combined to make 10 of 20 3-pointers.

“That was good for our team because we made improvement,” UI coach Julie Holt said. “That’s what we’ve got to do every week.”

Though the score was lopsided, the alumni probably had as much fun as possible while getting clobbered. The Alums trailed 52-27 at half, but generally held their own in the final 20 minutes.

“The second half was a lot more fun than the first,” said Robin (Behrens) Barnes, who played at UI from 1982-86 and is the new coach at Moscow High. “Their defense took us out of it.”

“Some of it obviously was that they haven’t played together, but I’d like to think we caused some of their turnovers, too,” Holt said.

In a 5-minute span in the first half, the Vandals outscored the Alums 25-2. UI’s lead swelled to 35-11 before the Alums closed to 35-20 on the feisty Barnes’ four points.

The Alums were within 72-54 as Sabrina Dial (1987-90) and Mindy Rice (1994- 96) heated up. But the Alums’ ball-handling, passing and fuel tanks failed them again and Woolf drilled two 3-pointers. Woolf finished with 18 points and six assists.

Jill Ortner’s 3-pointer gave the Vandals 100 points with 45 seconds remaining.
