Airline To Carry Heart Defibrillators

Tue., Nov. 19, 1996, midnight

American Airlines will become the first U.S. carrier to equip its planes with shock paddles to revive heart attack victims.

American will announce its plans today with the American Heart Association, which has been pushing to have defibrillators on all passenger planes, in government buildings and sports arenas.

Defibrillators can restart a heart that has stopped or correct abnormal heart rhythms that prevent proper blood flow to the rest of the body.
