North Idaho College’s home wrestling match against Yakima Valley on Wednesday night was cancelled due to the ice storm and rescheduled for Friday at 2 p.m.

Chaney, Bloom select Idaho

Coach Julie Holt announced Laura Chaney, a 6-foot-7 post, and Lewiston High’s Laura Bloom signed letters-of-intent to play at the University of Idaho.

Chaney redshirted for the Vandals in 1995-96 before transferring to De Anza Junior College in Cupertino, Calif., to be closer to her terminally ill mother.

Chaney will rejoin the team next year and will be the tallest player ever to suit up for the Vandals.

Bloom, a 6-2 post, averaged 11.2 points per game, 7.9 rebounds and shot 51 percent from the field as a junior last year.

The Vandal men’s team landed its third recruit. Marcus Tyler, a 6-8 center from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College (Wesson, Miss.), averaged 15.8 points, 9 rebounds and 3.3 blocked shots.

Previous recruits are North Idaho College wing Cameron Banks and Tacoma C.C. forward Dazmond Kinlow.

EWU’s Mattson honored

Eastern Washington University defensive end Steve Mattson, a pre-med major with a 3.66 grade-point average from Naselle, Wash., has been selected to the Region VIII GTE Academic All-America football team.

District VIII includes all NCAA Division I and I-AA colleges and universities in nine western states. Mattson becomes the 17th Eastern player in the past eight seasons to be selected to the District VIII squad. He is now included on the national ballot.

Mattson will be named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for the third straight year.
