Christian Punk-Rock Show At Underground

Isn’t the term, Christian punk-rock, an oxymoron?

Traditionally, punk strived to chisel away at the foundation of organized religion, particularly Christianity.

Bremerton’s MxPx, which plays an all-ages show at the Howard Street Underground on Saturday, doesn’t see a conflict in juggling their devotion to the Sex Pistols and to Jesus.

“It’s all about self-expression,” explains 20-year-old bassistvocalist Mike Herrera in The Rocket, a Seattle-based music publication.

“I gotta have integrity. I can’t just say, ‘This is punk rock so I have to do what (other punk rock musicians) do.’ We’re Christians, but we’re not missionaries. We’re not trying to save everybody. It just happens to be what we believe.”

Believe it or not, Christian punk is being demanded in the marketplace.

MxPx’s two previous releases “Pokinatcha” and “Teenage Politics” have sold a combined 100,000 copies. Not a bad feat for a trio of 20-year-olds on an indie label.

Yet, MxPx doesn’t pepper their new album “Life in General” with Christian over-tones. Seems like they could be moving away from the genre into just plain pop-fueled punk.

Opening bands for Saturday’s show include Ninety-Pound Wuss, the Cooties and the Prips.

Showtime’s at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. The Howard Street Underground is located downtown on the corner of Third and Howard.
