Banged-Up Hawks Scoff At Injuries

John Clayton Tacoma News Tribune

Winston Moss is playing despite a torn triceps muscle. Middle linebacker Dean Wells has to gut it out despite a left shoulder and a right hand that will need postseason surgery.

Terry Wooden missed seven games with a bad hamstring. The Seattle Seahawks’ linebackers don’t need a training room. They need a hospital ward.

“We’re going to put them all together and get one barbarian,” Seahawks linebackers coach Mike Murphy said. “We’re going to take the various body parts of the best. The problem is if we take the best of each one, we may have problems.”

Despite worries about injuries, all three linebackers will play Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders. Play with pain? Moss and the guys aren’t worried. They are used to it.

Take Moss, for instance. The former Raiders linebacker tore his right triceps muscle on the first defensive play of last week’s 17-16 loss to the Detroit Lions. He didn’t miss a play.

Doctors found a tear in the muscle. They suggested that it may need surgery now or later. Later is what Moss told the doctors. He’s playing.

“I told them, ‘Don’t waste my time talking about it, it’s no big deal,’ ” Moss said. “My best guess is if it doesn’t get any worse in five games, it may or may not need surgery. If it gets worse, it definitely needs surgery. We’ll have to look at it after the season.”

Wells is bothered by a ligament problem in the back of his left shoulder. The shoulder keeps popping out and only postseason surgery will fix it.

Warren ready

Halfback Chris Warren, back from a knee injury, is 100 percent, according to coach Dennis Erickson. Warren and fullback Mack Strong (knee) will start. Wide receiver Brian Blades, back two weeks after a shoulder separation, will also play, but Erickson will wait until game time to determine if he will start.

Inactive list

The Seahawks placed defensive end Matt LaBounty, linebacker Michael Barber, tight end Coleman Bell and tackle Robert Barr on the inactive list. The Raiders listed cornerbacks Larry Brown and Perry Carter, safety Eddie Anderson and running back Tim Hall on their inactive list. Darren Carrington will start for Anderson at free safety.
