Ccs Falls In Championship Match

Community Colleges of Spokane fell short in its quest for the NWAACC tournament championship Saturday at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore.

The Sasquatch lost the title match to Clackamas by scores of 15-6, 15-1, 17-15.

CCS dropped its first match of the day to Clackamas 16-14, 15-3, 10-15, 15-13. The Sasquatch made it into the finals by knocking off Lower Columbia 15-12, 15-13.

Jenni Rosselli had 44 kills and 37 digs on the day for the Sasquatch. JoEne Heimbigner totaled 91 assists in the three matches. Teammate Tiffany Moore finished with 16 kills and 55 digs.

CCS’s Rosselli and Heimbigner were named to the all-tournament first team.

They were joined by Shannon Segerstrom (Clackamas), Shawna Studerbaker (Skagit Valley), and Lower Columbia’s Michal Ann Skulke and Marni Amrine.

Misti-Kae Filley, of Clackamas, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Gonzaga came from behind to defeat Portland 13-15, 15-12, 15-9, 15-5 in West Coast Conference action at Portland.

Christine Kubista had 26 kills and Jennifer Kubista added 19 kills and 11 digs to spark Gonzaga (6-8, 13-19). Portland dropped to 3-11, 10-21.

The University of Idaho volleyball team, behind the record-setting performance of senior setter Lynne Hyland, advanced to the second round of the Big West Conference tournament with a 15-2, 12-15, 16-14, 15-6 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in Santa Barbara, Calif.

With her 64 assists, Hyland eclipsed the all-time assist mark at Idaho set by Kelley Neely, who amassed 4,744 from 1982-85. Hyland now sits atop the UI record book with 4,754 career assists.

The Vandals (25-5) jumped out to a big lead in game one but struggled with the Mustangs (14-16) in the following three games.

Sophomore outside hitter Beth Craig led all players with 21 kills.

Idaho will face Pacific today at 6 p.m.

Asked if this win will help the Vandals gain at at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, Hilbert replied: “Based on our powerful conference and our overall record, we need to win at least tomorrow night’s match to have a shot at making the tournament.”
