Nic’s Nearing Does It All In 70-53 Win Over Walla Walla

Jana Nearing scored 15 points, gathered in 10 rebounds and came up with seven steals Saturday night as North Idaho College raised its record to 3-0 with a 70-53 win over Walla Walla in a women’s college basketball matchup in Walla Walla.

North Idaho’s lead was a meager 28-23 at halftime, due mainly to some ice-cold shooting on the part of the Cardinals. But they warmed up considerably after intermission and pulled away by outscoring the Warriors 42-30 in the final 20 minutes.

Mandy Jacques also scored 15 points for NIC, while Melissa Schlettert paced Walla Walla (0-1) with 18 points.

CCS 70, Mt. Royal 58

Heather Brandt came up big off the bench by scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the Sasquatch’s home victory over the previously unbeaten Cougars.

“I was surprised at how we played - pleasantly surprised,” CCS coach Bruce Johnson said following his team’s season-opening win. “Our girls really played intense for the first 30 minutes.”

Community Colleges of Spokane, which also got 12 points from Misty Stark, led by as many as 25 points in the second half.

The defeat was the first for Mt. Royal this season. “We just had a good solid team effort,” Johnson said. “We turned (the ball) over 30 times, but we turned it over 10 times in the last 10 minutes. That’s why they got so close.”

The teams play again today.
