Sasquatch Men Win Crown, Women Fourth In Nwaacc

College soccer

The Community Colleges of Spokane men’s team overcame an early 1-0 deficit and rallied for a 3-1 victory over Bellevue to win the NWAACC soccer championship Saturday at Bothell.

Bellevue’s Hatan Attallah scored 13 minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead.

Shaun Noggle’s unassisted goal at the 29-minute mark pulled the Sasquatch even.

CCS took a 2-1 lead with 2 minutes left in the first half on a goal by Jeremy Stuart with an assist from Andy Bruno.

“When we went ahead just before the half, it took the wind out of their sails,” said assistant coach Jim Martinson.

Chad Brown scored the final CCS goal on a penalty kick 10 minutes into the second half.

CCS coach Cor van der Meer was named coach of the year and Stuart picked up the tournament’s most valuable player award.

CCS last won the NWAACC title in 1990, also under the guidance of van der Meer.

The CCS women finished fourth Saturday at the NWAACC soccer tournament in Bothell after falling to Edmonds 2-1 in sudden-death overtime.

The Sasquatch took a 1-0 lead at the 5-minute mark of overtime on a penalty-kick goal by Jenn Barrett.

Edmonds knotted the score 2 minutes later when Michelle Osborne tapped it in after a previous shot slipped off the hands of CCS keeper Kami McGowan.

In the shootout, Edmonds’ Charity Hanson scored first and Barrett matched it for CCS. Both teams missed the second attempt. After Osborne scored on Edmonds’ third attempt, CCS got a goal from Katie Snow to send it to sudden death.

Ellie Gaeth scored on Edmond’s first attempt in sudden death. CCS missed on its chance to tie.
