Frustrated Seahawks Get 11-1 Broncos Next

The Seattle Seahawks didn’t have much of an alternative Monday - review Sunday’s demoralizing 27-21 loss to Oakland or look forward to a road game with AFC bully Denver?

It’s a little like choosing between painting your house or going to the dentist. Neither option is too appealing.

The Seahawks chose to look back and ahead.

“It’s frustrating to have two back-to-back losses (Oakland and Detroit) where we had solid chances to win,” defensive end Mike Sinclair said. “We could be 7-5.”

“Obviously, we thought we’d be in better position, or at least be in wild-card position for the playoffs. To be where we’re at is very disappointing,” fullback Mack Strong said of the Hawks’ 5-7 record. “A lot of people say we don’t have anything to play for, but definitely we do. We’ve got our pride to play for. Anything can happen in the NFL.”

Mirer review

Rick Mirer got passing grades in his return at quarterback. He didn’t lose the game, nor did he win it. He finished 16 of 25 for 181 yards with one touchdown in his first start since losing the job to John Friesz. Friesz is out with a broken bone in his leg.

“For not playing in 5 or 6 weeks, I thought he played pretty well,” coach Dennis Erickson said.

“We did a lot of good things; we ran the ball, threw it and caught it,” offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said. “We had a couple of dropped balls.”

Nearly half of Mirer’s yardage came on two spectacular receptions by Joey Galloway, covering 40 and 42 yards. Those acrobatic catches set up 15 of the Hawks’ 21 points.

Erickson’s face wrinkled when asked if Galloway was interferred with by Raiders cornerback Terry McDaniel on the Hawks’ last drive.

“Incredible,” he said, biting his tongue. “I can’t comment on that.”

Bruiser bruised

Steve Broussard, the former Washington State Cougar, probably will miss the rest of the season. The recovery timetable for the hamstring pull he suffered Sunday is about four weeks. Corey Harris becomes the lead kick returner.

Reserve defensive back and special teamer T.J. Cunningham is out for the year after suffering major knee damage Sunday.
