Hastings On Rules Committee

Associated Press

Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., won an appointment to the House Rules Committee on Monday, giving Washington’s delegation a seat on each of the four most significant panels in the House.

Members of the Rules Committee are influential because they determine during committee action which amendments will be allowed to be considered to bills on the House floor.

Hastings had to give up his seats on the National Security and Resources committees in order to secure a spot on the rules panel.

Rep. Jennifer Dunn, R-Wash., a member of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee who just was elected to the House GOP leadership, had been pushing Hastings for the job so as to increase the state delegation’s clout.

Rep. George Nethercutt, R-Wash., serves on the Appropriations Committee and Rep. Rick White, R-Wash., serves on the Commerce Committee.
