Obituaries

Donald Murray Seattle

No service will be held for Donald Ray Murray, a former Spokane resident.

Mr. Murray, 83, died Saturday.

He was born in Spokane and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

A retired Postal Service employee, he moved to Seattle two years ago.

He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, the South Hill Senior Center and the Eagles Lodge in Spokane.

His wife of 54 years, Eunice Murray, died in 1989.

Mr. Murray is survived by a daughter, Donna Hamlin, and a son, Larry Murray, both of Seattle; three sisters, Gwen Hedeen of Seattle, Carol Weyer of Camano Island, Wash., and Barbara Barrett of Spokane; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Bethany Presbyterian Church.

Margaret Saunders Spokane

Memorial service for Margaret D. Saunders, 81, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Saunders died Nov. 10.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She had lived in the Spokane area since she was 15 years old and attended North Central High School.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star’s Electa Chapter and had received her 50-year pin. She served as a representative from Washington to Saskatchewan for the Eastern Star and was a member of the Moose Kitchen Band.

She is survived by her former husband, Jack Saunders, and a twin brother, Joseph Ross of Spokane.

Thelma Adkison Spokane

No service will be held for Thelma M. Adkison, 92, at her request. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Adkison, a retired teacher, died Monday.

She graduated from North Idaho Junior College in Lewiston, and she taught in Lewiston, Grangeville and Culdesac, Idaho, and Asotin and Naches, Wash.

She retired in 1966 after 42 years.

She was a member of the Washington State Retired Teachers Association, the Washington State Grange in Yakima, the Rebekah Lodge, Magnolia Chapter 194 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Calvary Shrine 15 of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Order of the Amaranth Court 52 and Daughters of the Nile Malac Temple 55.

She was known for the dolls she dressed up for needy children. Each year she completed 50 to 75 dolls that went to the Ronald McDonald House and Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.

Her husband of 24 years, John Adkison, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a daughter, Beverlee Wright of Spokane, three grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

Gene Lomker Spokane

A private memorial service was held for Gene Lomker, 89.

Mrs. Lomker, who was born in Juliaetta, Idaho, died Monday.

She had lived in Spokane for 54 years and was a volunteer with the March of Dimes and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and at election polling precincts.

She attended Kinman Business College and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Her husband of 50 years, Walter Lomker, died in June She is survived by three daughters, Linda McNeese of Liberty Lake, Paula Kelly of Veradale and Carol Gaffney of Newman Lake; a sister, Ursula Clark of Spokane; and two granddaughters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the March of Dimes.

Sanfort James Spokane

Service for Sanfort Shelton James, 76, was Tuesday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will be at Ahsahka (Idaho) Tribal Cemetery.

He was born in Orofino, Idaho, and died Nov. 18.

Mr. James was a longtime Spokane resident and served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by two daughters, Elvira Crowshoe of Springdale, Wash., and Sandra James of Lapwai, Idaho; a son, Sanfort James Jr. of Lapwai; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Francis Shelley Veradale

Visitation for Francis James Shelley, 81, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Trentwood.

Mr. Shelley died Friday at the Washington State Veterans Home in Retsil, Wash.

He was born in Veradale and his family settled the Vera area in Spokane County. Shelley Lake is named after his family.

He graduated from Central Valley High School and worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. He then worked for Bonneville Power.

He served in the Army during World War II and returned to the Bonneville Power following the war. He worked as a law clerk until 1955, when he retired due to a disability.

He is survived by a sister, Laura Gwinn, and a brother, Marcus Shelley, both of Spokane.

Paul Abraham Spokane

Private memorial service and inurnment will be held for Paul O. Abraham, 76, at a later date. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Abraham, who died Nov. 19, was born in Dresden, Kan.

He was a 55-year Spokane resident and served as an elementary school principal for School District 81.

He served in the Army and Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Abraham is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty Abraham; and two sisters, Ruth Peterson of Pilot Mount, Iowa, and Esther Long of Houston.

Harold Turner Spokane

Private burial for Harold F. Turner, 88, will be Friday at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Vian, Okla., Mr. Turner died Sunday.

He was a World War II Army veteran and worked for the Spokane Chronicle as a printer. He retired in 1973.

Mr. Turner was a member of the Communication Workers Union.

His wife, Roby Turner, died in 1987.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Robertson of Glendale, Calif.; and a granddaughter.

Dr. Gilbert Schneider Spokane

Funeral Mass for Gilbert Frank Schneider, M.D., is set for 11 a.m. Friday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Schneider, 87, died Sunday. He was born in Evansville, Ind.

He graduated from Evansville College and Indiana University School of Medicine.

In 1945 he moved to Spokane from Vancouver, Wash., and specialized in thoracic surgery. He was a staff member for Sacred Heart Medical Center, Deaconess Medical Center, St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital, Edgecliff Hospital for Tuberculosis, Spokane Valley General Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he was a consultant in thoracic surgery.

Dr. Schneider was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Lung Association, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Surgeons and St. Augustine Catholic Church.

His wife, Lillian Schneider, died in 1991.

Survivors include a son, Gil Schneider of Spokane; two daughters, Susan Neale of Woodbridge, Conn., and JoAnne Schneider of Entiat, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Medical Center Fund.

Roosevelt ‘Bob’ Hooper Spokane

Private service for Roosevelt “Bob” Hooper, 62, was held.

Mr. Hooper, who was born in Anderson, S.C., died Saturday.

He was in the Air Force for four years and served in Korea.

He worked at Kaiser Aluminum in Mead for 21 years and retired in 1987.

Mr. Hooper’s survivors include his wife of 41 years, Pat Hooper; a daughter, Doris Rauscher of Spokane; six sons, Robert, James, Ronald, John, Steven and Russell Hooper, all of Spokane; two sisters, Carrie Rangos of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Veda Lee Hipp of Travelers Rest, S.C.; three brothers, Raymond Hooper of Warren, Mich., Lawyer Hooper of Charleston, S.C. and Albert Hooper of Easley, S.C.; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Margaret Andersen Spokane

Memorial service for Margaret Ann Andersen, 87, will be held at a later date. Riplinger Funeral Home in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Andersen, a 50-year Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

She was born in Whitepine, Mont., and was a homemaker.

She was a member of the White Rose Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 60 years, Salem Lutheran Church, the Central Council of the Scout Mothers, and the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge.

Her husband, Andrew Andersen, died in 1976.

Mrs. Andersen is survived by a son, John Andersen of San Antonio, Texas.

Cecil Watson Spokane

Visitation for Cecil R. Watson, 82, is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. There will be private burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Post Falls, Mr. Watson died Monday.

He lived in Post Falls until 1953 and was a longtime Spokane resident.

He worked for the Waikiki Dairy for several years and later as a truck driver for McHugo Transfer, later Anderson Moving and Storage. He retired in 1975.

He was a member and former lay pastor of Lidgerwood Evangelical Church.

His wife of 60 years, Marie Watson, died in 1995.

Mr. Watson is survived by two sons, Bill and Kelly Watson, both of Spokane; a daughter, Linda Hall of Elma, Wash.; a brother, Robert Watson; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Robert Shaw Spokane

Memorial service for Robert W. Shaw, 82, is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at St. David’s Episcopal Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Washington state, Mr. Shaw died Sunday.

He graduated from North Central High School and worked as a residential building contractor.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lucy Shaw; two daughters, Judith Ann Shaw Edgerton and Janet Lynn Shaw, both of Spokane; a brother, Thomas Shaw of Salem, Ore.; and a sister, Ida Storkson of Spokane.

Raymond Severson Stanwood, Wash.

Service for Raymond F. Severson, 87, was Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Silvana, Wash. Burial was at Milltown Cemetery north of Stanwood.

Mr. Severson, a former Spokane resident, died Monday.

He was born in Seattle.

He lived in Spokane from 1954 until 1986, when he moved to Seattle. He had lived in Stanwood for about a year and a half.

In Spokane, he was a furniture factory representative for several factories in the Northwest. He was also active at Messiah Lutheran Church and was the Sunday School superintendent there for many years.

His wife, Virginia, died in 1985.

Survivors include three daughters, Doreen James of Anacortes, Wash., Marylee Sans of Warm Beach, Wash., and Kathy Johnson of Redmond, Wash.; and 12 grandchildren.

John Bruno Spirit Lake, Idaho

Memorial service for John Edward Bruno, 58, will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. Interment will be at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home of Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bruno, who was born in California, died Monday.

He grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and served with the Marine Corps.

After his military service, he worked for Hewlett-Packard in California. He moved to Liberty Lake in 1980 and to Spirit Lake in 1992.

Survivors include his wife, Nadia; two sons, Jeffrey Bruno of Spokane and Scott Bruno of Oregon; a daughter, Kimberly Bruno of Coeur d’Alene; his mother, Doris Bruno of California; two sisters, Yvonne Richardson and Doreen Nickel, both of California; and three grandchildren.
