Hoosiers Stun No. 6 Duke

Andrae Patterson, the hero of Indiana’s semifinal victory, scored a career-high 39 points Friday night to lead the 20th-ranked Hoosiers over No. 6 Duke 85-69 in the championship game of the Preseason NIT in New York.

The 6-foot-8 junior had 20 points in the semifinal victory over Evansville. He scored from inside and out against Duke (3-1) and at one point made 15 straight points for the Hoosiers (5-0).

At Winston-Salem, N.C., Tim Duncan scored five of his 20 points during a decisive first-half run in which the Demon Deacons (3-0) pushed their 32-28 lead to 49-32 with 8:27 left, finally getting Davidson (2-1) into a running game.

(5) Villanova 68, American P.R. 62

Alvin Williams scored 20 points, including 10 in the final 3-1/2 minutes, to lead the Wildcats to a first-round victory at the San Juan Shootout in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

In the season opener for both teams, the Wildcats trailed until Williams tied the score at 57 on a 3-pointer with 3:11 remaining.

At Anchorage, the Wildcats scored early and often in routing the Great Alaska Shootout host Seawolves during second-round action.

Merl Code scored 19 points and the Tigers (3-0) used a late 10-0 run to hold off the Blue Hens (2-1) in the first round of the San Juan Shootout in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

(12) Syracuse 85, Maine 65

Todd Burgan scored 18 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Syracuse past Maine (3-1) in the second round of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Orangemen (2-1) made a team-record 13 3-pointers a day after going 1-for-11 from long range in an 87-53 loss to No. 8 Kentucky.

(14) N. Carolina 82, Pittsburgh 61

Antawn Jamison led a one-man attack on Pittsburgh in the second half and finished with a career-high 36 points as the Tar Heels (2-1) pulled away from the Panthers (0-3).

Jamison scored the most points of any Tar Heel to play in the Dean Smith Center at Chapel Hill, N.C., since it opened in January 1986.

(15) Fresno St. 87, Northeastern 71

Dominick Young made three straight 3-pointers midway through the second half to break open a close game as Fresno defeated Northeastern in its own Coors Light Classic.

FSU (3-0) will face Liberty for the tournament championship tonight.

Charleston 82, (21) Stanford 78

The College of Charleston used eight free throws in the final 26 seconds and Anthony Johnson’s 20 points to beat the Cardinal in the Great Alaska Shootout’s second round in Anchorage, Alaska. The Cougars took the lead for good with 4:54 to play on a spinning drive by Jermel President, who then sank a free throw to make it 66-63.

The Cardinal stayed within five points the rest of the way despite 7-foot-1 center Tim Young fouling out with 6:19 left and taking his 22 points with him to the bench.

(22) Tulsa 55, Evansville 51

At New York, Michael Ruffin had 10 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the Golden Hurricane (3-1) to victory over the Purple Aces (2-2) in the third-place game of the Preseason NIT.

(24) Minnesota 104, Mayaguez 62

John Thomas scored 21 points and Bobby Jackson had 14, leading the Golden Gophers (3-0) to victory in the first round of the San Juan Shootout at Caguas, Puerto Rico.
