Burundi Army Seals Border

Compiled From Wire Services

Ambushes and army operations closed roads leading out of Burundi’s capital Tuesday as leaders struggled to solve the nation’s ethnic crisis.

Heavy fighting between the Tutsi-dominated army and Hutu rebels shut the main road between Bujumbura and the northern half of the country, soldiers said.

Local residents said the army has been fighting rebels near the Kibira National Forest for more than two weeks, leaving hundreds dead. Rebels use the dense tropical forest northwest of Bujumbura as cover for their bases.
