Doonesbury Not Funny For Attorney General

As the state’s top law enforcement officer, Attorney General Dan Lungren has taken on thugs and hoodlums. Add a comic strip to the list.

In a capitol news conference Tuesday that conjured up images of former Vice President Dan Quayle’s attack on the television show “Murphy Brown,” Lungren blasted Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau for portraying the medical use of marijuana in a positive light in his comic strip running all this week.

The news conference occurred the same day Lungren’s name appeared in an unflattering manner in the comic strip. This week’s installment is focusing on Proposition 215, a November ballot initiative that would legalize the use of marijuana for medical patients in California.

Lungren, who opposes the initiative, was smoking mad.

“There are all sorts of kids in California who are put at risk because of this nonsense,” Lungren said. “And to have some guy sitting back somewhere in the East Coast laughing about the facts of drug use in California with the impact it’s had on kids, that’s what makes me mad.”
