Waste-disposal site belongs someplace else

The proposal to enlarge the established landfill east of Brooks Road and north of McFarlane Road is unthinkable to the residents of the Sunwest area.

The ground water is our biggest concern. Whether the water runs east or west, north or south, it always runs downhill, which is a given fact! The first large mass of ground water is only 30 feet deep in this area, which doesn’t give much room for waste material.

When you go on top of the ground and cover it with sand, the sand is so porous that it soaks through and runs off and downhill from his property with an expensive well that eventually will be contaminated.

The dirt that is piled on top is dusty and sandy during the summer and fall months, which is blowing dust and dirt toward Spokane. Spokane has enough problems with dust particles in the air without this added contamination from the landfill, especially with prevailing southwest winds in this area.

Another issue is the underground gas lines that run through the area of the proposed land site. The danger of rupture and contamination of the area should be a state problem, not a county problem.

Surely in this state, with all of the barren land that there is, there should be a better place to put a waste-disposal site - some place away from residential areas and places in danger of water contamination. Sarah Jayne Jensen Medical Lake
