Race Relations Study Group Forming Program At Manito Methodist Set Up To Help People Overcome Racial Barriers

Nina Culver Correspondent

The Spokane Human Rights Commission is sponsoring a race relations study circle that will meet each Wednesday in October from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Manito United Methodist Church, 33rd and Grand Boulevard.

The goal of the program is to help people overcome barriers and share ideas with people of other races.

Weekly discussions will focus on cases presented from the book “The Busy Citizen’s Discussion Guide: Racism and Race Relations.”

Members of the Lighthouse Tabernacle, an African-American church, will also participate in the study circle.

The Human Rights Commission is also sponsoring other study circles in the area. Anyone interested in attending this or any other study circle should contact Commission Chair Janet Stevenson at 747-4828.

Manito United Methodist also is holding its all-church rummage sale and a bake sale this weekend. The sale is Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Lunch will be available both days.

Songwriter will appear

Singer-songwriter Jim Manley will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Congregational Church, 411 S. Washington. Manley’s songs are widely circulated in hymnals used by many denominations, and he performs at concerts across the country.

Suggested donation for the concert is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Child care will be available.

Rummage sale at St. Stephen’s

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church is holding a rummage sale this weekend at the church, 5720 S. Perry. The sale will be from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local charity.

Faith in workplace topic

Lay Ministries Northwest has formed a group called The Workplace Connection that discusses faith and values in the workplace.

The group meets the first Friday of each month as speakers of various professions discuss how their faith has helped them deal with difficult decisions at work.

The workshop is free, and the group meets from 7 to 8 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar. (Last weekend’s fire at the church did not require relocating the meeting.)

For more information call Lay Ministries at 326-6352.
