Third-Ranked University Runs Down No. 2 Saxons

Third-ranked University edged second-ranked Ferris on Wednesday with the help of an unexpected source.

Pat McGuire, the Titans’ No. 5 runner, finished one place ahead of Ferris’ No. 5 as U-Hi (3-1) won 27-28 at Finch Arboretum to highlight the second week of Greater Spokane League three-way boys cross country meets.

Isaac Hawkins of Ferris (3-1) zipped through the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 55 seconds - 43 seconds better than U-Hi’s James Berry. Cameron Hatch of Rogers (1-3) was third in 16:51.

Elsewhere, top-ranked Mead (4-0) placed seven in the top nine to beat fourth-ranked Gonzaga Prep (2-2) and Central Valley (0-4) at Liberty Lake.

Jason Fayant finished the 3 miles in 15:56, 3 seconds better than teammate Morgan Thompson. Prep’s Jim Rucker (16:11) was third while CV’s Robby Warnock, the leader at the halfway point, took fourth in 16:17.

At Audubon Park, Justin Hill outkicked Shadle Park’s Casey Perry in the final 500 yards to lead North Central (4-0) to two wins and a tie for first place.

Hill’s 15:36 for 3 miles eclipsed Perry by 5 seconds. Fourth-place Nate Nelson (16:22) led Lewis and Clark (1-3) past Shadle 25-32.

In GSL girls three-ways, top-ranked Ferris (4-0) finished 1-2-3 to top third-ranked U-Hi 25-31 at Finch. Winner Jennifer Smith (19:17) beat runner-up Emily Hawkins by 34 seconds. U-Hi (2-2) took spots 4-7, led by Taraka Campbell (20:52). Rogers is 0-4.

Led by Katie Pollock’s 19:37, Mead (4-0) took the top four positions for a double win at Liberty Lake. Fifth-place Jill Larson (20:42) helped G-Prep (1-3) past CV 25-31. Anne Peterson of CV (2-2) was seventh in 20:49.

At Audubon, runner-up Christa Eide (19:33) passed LC’s Mindy Noble and seventh-place Julie Sawatzky held off two other Tigers as Shadle (2-2) nipped LC 26-29. Jamie Borgan of LC (2-2) won in 19:19. Sixth-place Tassy Mueller (20:22) led NC (1-3).

Girls soccer

Katrina Morton reached a loose ball and knocked it into an open net with 6 minutes left as visiting Mead (7-0-0, 1-0-0) edged Ferris 1-0 in a GSL match.

On Morton’s goal, Mead’s Kellie Leaf sent a kick toward goalkeeper Kelly McCaffrey, who lost the ball off her hands. Moments earlier, Megan Cummings of the Saxons (4-4-0, 0-1-0) hit the post with a header.

Elsewhere, Dani Thorn scored four goals - including three straight for a 3-2 lead - as first-place Gonzaga Prep (6-3-0, 2-0-0) beat decimated Central Valley 8-2 at CV.

Caryn Nadeau added one goal and one assist for the Bullpups. Angie Foedish and Katie Carpenter scored for CV, which lost stopper Janna Usher - the fourth Bears starter lost to injury in two matches.

Sara Streufert’s goal with 10 minutes left lifted U-Hi (5-1-0, 1-0-0) over visiting LC 2-1. Streufert also assisted on Leah Brereton’s goal. Jessica Fransen of the Tigers (1-5-0, 1-1-0) beat scored at 10 minutes.

At NC, Amanda Chase passed to Leah Turner for a tap-in goal with 12 minutes left as the Indians (1-6-0, 1-1-0) edged visiting Rogers 2-1. The match was scoreless until 55 minutes, when Cheri Bibb scored off Kristin Walters’ corner kick. Two minutes later, Holly Rushing of the Pirates (2-8-0, 0-2-0) scored on a penalty kick.
