Lc Senior Dominates Nc Game

Dave Trimmer Staff Writer

Bryce Stack was in on so many big plays, he wasn’t sure which one he enjoyed the most.

“That interception was pretty nice,” the Lewis and Clark senior said, “but both those touchdowns…”

Stack returned a blocked punt for a TD, caught a short pass for another score and ended North Central’s hopes with an interception as the Tigers topped the Indians 20-6 in a Greater Spokane League football game before 2,675 fans at Albi Stadium Thursday night.

“I was just feeling good tonight,” Stack said. “The team played together really well.”

That also was true.

Sophomore Pete Flatt, filling in for injured running back Josh Bankston, one of the top rushers in the league, carried 22 times for 60 yards. Quarterback Brian Agnew, a week after going 0 for 5 with two interceptions, completed 4 of 7 for 62 yards.

North Central struck first after the Tigers fumbled the opening kickoff. The offense stalled, but Cody Smith booted a 43-yard field goal.

LC stalled on the next possession, but when NC was forced to punt from its 17, Joe Ireland broke through to block the kick and Stack picked up the ball at the 8 before trotting into the end zone.

“We really worked hard on (the block) yesterday and the day before, having Joe rush that guy,” Stack said, although he admitted he was lucky to be standing next to the bouncing ball.

After Luke Bowman picked off a Ryan Corigliano pass near midfield, LC went 53 yards in 10 plays with Agnew cutting off left guard for the 2-yard TD.

A big kickoff return by Ray Bowser got the Indians to midfield and, with the help of a face-mask penalty on LC, they got to the 1. However, on fourth down, 145-pound defensive back Derek Johnston stopped Brian Mack.

“Our kids played hard,” NC coach Wes Hobbs said. “Take away that blocked punt - we simply took too long to kick it - and getting stopped on the 6-inch line. … Those guys can flat play defense on the 1. That was the second week in a row they did that.”

Corigliano was filling in for Mike Caballero, who missed the game for disciplinary reasons, and returning all-league lineman Brandon Harmer injured a knee in the third quarter.

“We ended up with some kids in positions they’re not accustomed to and they played hard,” Hobbs said. “We’re coming on … we hung in there when it could have gotten ugly.”
