Compiled From Wire Services

Rick Fehr shot a 3-under 69 Friday to get to 20 under and take a two-shot lead over Davis Love III and Fred Funk going into the final two rounds of the Las Vegas Invitational at Las Vegas, Nev.

Love and Funk were 18 under, while Fred Couples was in a group at 16-under, four back, with three others. Lee Janzen and Paul Azinger were another two strokes back along with Tiger Woods, who shot a 68 that could have been much better after making the turn at 5-under.

Raymond Floyd, Bunky Henry, Jim Colbert and Harold Henning fired 5-under-par 66s to share the lead after the opening round of the $800,000 Ralphs Senior Classic at Los Angeles.

Caroline Pierce, the leader by three strokes, and Michelle McGann shot the only rounds in the 60s in two days in the JAL Big Apple Classic at New Rochelle, N.Y.

The 67s by Pierce and McGann, who was tied for second with Dottie Pepper after 36 holes, were three strokes better than any other round in the tournament.

In a statement released through the PGA Tour, John Daly, an admitted alcoholic, acknowledged he has been drinking.

“It is true that I have had a few beers on several occasions this summer,” he said in the statement, “but I have not been involved in any alcohol-related incidents. I have not been drinking to excess, and this has not been the reason the level of my play lately has been below my usual standards.”
