‘Roosevelt’ Affirms ‘Experience’ Reputation

Faye Zuckerman New York Times Syndicate

The documentary series “American Experience” kicks off season No. 9 with a stirring study of Theodore Roosevelt.

The program airs on KSPS Sunday and Monday at 8.

“TR: The Story of Theodore Roosevelt” exemplifies why “American Experience” is great: It’s well-researched and filled with rich interviews and rare photographs.

Highlights

“Baseball,” NBC today at 4:30 p.m. and ESPN at 8 p.m.: Divisional play continues. Earlier, ESPN has the first of day four’s games at 10 a.m. FOX has a game at 1 p.m. There’s more action Sunday, if necessary.

“Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” CBS tonight at 8: It’s a gut-wrenching hour when a baby dies in Dr. Mike’s (Jane Seymour) care. She’s sued for malpractice and prevented from practicing medicine.

A judge orders the doctor to pay damages.

“Relativity,” ABC tonight at 10: The series about young love examines how first impressions can be wrong and takes a look at Everett’s (Randall Batinkoff) broken heart. Leo (David Conrad) unexpectedly comes in contact with him in a poignant scene.

“Saturday Night Live,” NBC tonight at 11:30: Lisa Kudrow (“Friends”) hosts; Sheryl Crow makes music.

“Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” ABC Sunday at 8: Yes fans, the two finally tie the knot, but only after a drawn-out story about the so-called Wedding Destroyer (Delta Burke).

“Presidential Debate,” ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, C-SPAN, KSPS Sunday at 6: Bill Clinton takes on Bob Dole in Hartford, Conn.

Parents’ pick

“Audubon’s Animal Adventures,” DISN Sunday at 6:30: With the enthusiasm of a child collecting insects in the back yard, Brad Kane (voice of “Aladdin”) narrates “Bat Adventures.” It’s a look at the creepy flying creatures that, according to this half-hour, have gotten a bad rap.

Besides consuming mosquitos, bats, Kane says, “are one of the most gentle and helpful animals on the planet. The real story on bats has been shrouded by nasty myths.”

If you decide to fly with the bats, you’ll learn much about the cool critters’ contribution to nature.

Cable Calls

“Bridges of Madison County” (1995), HBO tonight at 8: The intensely romantic tale about an affair between a National Geographic photographer (Clint Eastwood) and a farm wife (Meryl Streep) is, at times, overlong. Other times, it’s wonderfully lyrical.

The acting is superb, and the directing by Eastwood is top-notch.

“Anything for Love” (1996), SHO Sunday at 8: This film anthology serves up three stories about romance. “Lieberman in Love,” directed by Christine Lahti, won a 1995 Oscar in the short subject category. Lahti plays a quirky hooker who falls for a widower (Danny Aiello).
