Boys Sweep, Girls Blaze For Mead At Sunfair

Mead High School made the 22nd SunFair Invitational its personal possession Saturday.

The top-ranked Mead boys won all seven flights for a perfect score of seven at the state’s largest cross country invite.

The second-ranked Mead girls won four of seven flights to beat unranked Mountain View, top-ranked Ferris and third-ranked University.

Mead’s boys, who won their 10th consecutive title at the 3-mile Franklin Park course in Yakima, also registered a perfect score in 1993.

Jason Fayant (15 minutes, 23 seconds), Morgan Thompson (15:32), Ryan Wiser (15:53), Damon Ristau (16:15), Tom Becker (16:26), Chris Deulen (16:39) and Josh McLellan (16:37) won flights for the Panthers.

The Panthers girls scored 21 to overcome surprising Mountain View (37), Ferris (46) and U-Hi (47). Mead’s flight winners were Kelley Mattingly, flight five, 19:27; Annie McCabe, flight three, 20:20; Theresa Mattingly, flight two, 20:14; and Cami McVay, flight one, 20:22.

Jennifer Smith of Ferris won flight seven in 18:16. Teammate Emily Hawkins won flight six in 18:38.

The U-Hi boys had top-seven placers in six races to finish second with 50 points. U-Hi’s Mark Davis came within 1 second of catching Deulen in flight two.

Defending State AA girls champion East Valley and defending State A/B boys champion Chewelah cruised to wins at the Can-Am Invitational near Kettle Falls.

David Yarnell (16:08 for 3 miles) led Chewelah to a 1-2-3 finish and 24 points. Fourth-place Dustin Sletner (16:48) guided EV to second place.

EV’s girls, with six runners in the top 10, scored 28. Colville’s Crystal Evans (19:10) won the race, 6 seconds up on EV’s Cara Smith.

Volleyball: Fourth-place Lewis and Clark (6-3) beat visiting Rogers 15-7, 15-6, 15-6 in the Greater Spokane League by scoring the final six points of the first and third games and the final eight of the middle game.

Gretchen Haight had three kills and Erin Naipo three aces during the middle-game run. Naipo also had five aces to end the match. Jaime Christensen had 10 aces for Rogers (8-2), now tied for second place with Mead.

Mead’s Jessica Sanborn had 11 kills and four blocks during a 15-1, 15-7, 15-2 win at Shadle Park (2-8). The Highlanders’ Michelle Etter had eight kills and two blocks.

Darcy Ruemping had 13 digs and four aces as first-place Ferris (10-0) beat host University 15-6, 8-15, 15-4, 15-2. Allison Fryer of the Titans (0-10) had seven kills and four blocks.

In a Northeast A League showdown, Angie Hall’s 12 kills and 10 digs led Colfax (7-0) to a 15-7, 5-15, 15-4, 15-8 win over visiting Newport (5-1).

Girls soccer: Tara Brown’s 25-yard shot 2 minutes into the match lifted Colville (2-7-0, 2-6-0) to a 1-0 Frontier League win at Clarkston (0-7-1).
