Flooding Leaves 1,500 Homeless In Mexico

Compiled From Wire Services

Heavy rains have filled streets in this city on the Texas border with up to 3 feet of water, leaving more than 1,500 homeless and two people dead.

Authorities on Saturday recovered the body of a teenager who drowned after falling into a canal in Matamoros, and the Notimex news agency blamed the weather for the electrocution of a 25-year-old man in a rural part of the same state, Tamaulipas.

The flooding began Friday, and on Saturday Gov. Manuel Cavazos Lerma declared a state of emergency.

Matamoros, population 370,000, is across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Texas.

Flooding and mudslides caused by other storms Friday were also reported in Veracruz and Durango states and near Mexico City.
