Master Classes, Lessons For Vocalists

William Woodruff, a master vocal teacher from New York City, will conduct three master classes and teach private lessons at Holy Names Community Center at Fort Wright on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Woodruff is founder and director of the International Institute of Vocal Arts summer program in Italy and taught in the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, for 13 years.

He has been a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the American Opera Society, the Metropolitan Opera Studio and others and is on the faculty at the Israel Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv.

Woodruff will work with intermediate vocalists at the Spokane Falls Community College Music Building on Wednesday at 10 a.m. He will hold classes for beginners in Holy Names’ Recital Hall on Thursday at 3 p.m. and will conduct classes for professional singers Friday at 7 p.m. at the SFCC Music Building.

Observers may attend the sessions for $5.

Auditions

Lake City Playhouse will hold auditions for “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” on Wednesday in the Coeur d’Alene Cultural Center.

Tryouts for the musical will begin at 6 p.m. for children, followed by auditions for adults.

Also needed is a music director and/or pianist for the production.

Director Carmen Jackson will provide music for the auditions.

Poetry contest

Kalliope, a journal of women’s art, is taking entries for its fourth-annual poetry contest for women. The contest is co-sponsored by Papier-Mache Press; Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Maxine Kumin will be the final judge.

First prize is $1,000 plus publication of the poem in the magazine. Poems may be in any style and on any subject, but maximum length is 50 lines. Entry fee is $3 per poem or four for $10.
