Salt Lake City has been chosen to host the 1999 U.S. Figure Skating Association national championships.

Anne Marie Jensen, sports coordinator for the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee, said the championships will serve as a “hands-on test” event as the committee prepares to stage the 2002 Winter Games.

The choice of Salt Lake was made Friday at the end of a two-day meeting of the skating association’s 50-member board in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Austrian skier Richard Kroell, a winner of three World Cup slalom races was killed when his car collided head-on with a bus in the province of Tirol.
