Volcano Rumbling In New Guinea
One of two volcanoes that devastated part of New Britain island two years ago spewed ash thousands of feet into the air Sunday, prompting authorities to evacuate 200 people.
The evacuation near the island’s capital of Rabaul, was voluntary and purely precautionary, said Leith Anderson, National Disaster and Emergency Services director. New Britain is just east of the Papua New Guinea mainland.
The active Tavurvur volcano has been emitting ash and rumbling since Friday, Anderson said.
