Learn About Suicide Prevention At Workshop
Are you interested in learning how to help your friends through thoughts of suicide? Do you want to learn more about suicide prevention? If so, now is your chance to learn techniques from professionals.
The Suicide Prevention Task Force is sponsoring five workshops that will teach a prevention method called QPR. The QPR (Question, Persuade, Referral) method was developed by Dr. Paul Quinnett, a member of the task force and known expert on suicide issues.
The workshops will explore facts and myths about suicide. You will also learn about the signs of someone who may be suicidal and where you can guide them in finding help.
Suicide may not seem like a common occurrence, but it really is. In 1994, 54 people in Spokane County committed suicide. That’s slightly more than one a week, and that is very scary.
Suicide is one of the most preventable forms of death, and often its victims just wanted someone to talk to.
If you are interested in these workshops (they’re open to anyone), call Robin Battermann at Spokane County Health District, 324-1473, for more information.
Get busy: Family-A-Fair is still looking for teen volunteers to help with the weekend-long family workshop coming up Oct. 18-20.
This year, the non-profit event needs more than 200 young adults to help out in setting up and running the many information and activity booths. Everything from facepainting to book-reading skills are needed. Call 456-3733 for complete information.
