Stretches Of I-90 To Have Restrictions

From Staff Reports

Traffic restrictions on stretches of Interstate 90 in Spokane go into effect today as construction crews install weather sensors.

The sensors will measure pavement temperatures and relay the information to a state Department of Transportation computer.

The computer will alert officials when ice is starting to form, and crews can apply de-icing chemicals before the roads freeze over, according to officials.

Construction work is scheduled to run in two phases. Between 9 and 11:30 a.m., the right lane of westbound I-90 will be closed between Hamilton and Altamont, as will the westbound Altamont on-ramp.

From 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., the right lane of westbound I-90 will be closed in the Sunset Hill area. All ramps in that area will remain open.

If time permits, crews may install another sensor on I-90 near Liberty Lake. If that work takes place, the eastbound on-ramp at the Liberty Lake exit will be closed for part of the afternoon.

The weather sensor project is a cooperative effort by the state transportation department, the city of Spokane, Spokane County and Spokane International Airport.
