With Sanborn On Hand, Mead Turns Back Rogers

Jessica Sanborn’s presence made a definite difference the second time Mead faced Rogers in Greater Spokane League volleyball.

Sanborn’s 14 kills and eight blocks Wednesday helped the Panthers (9-3) beat visiting Rogers 15-12, 16-14, 15-10 and take over second place.

Sanborn was on a recruiting trip Sept. 17 when Mead lost to the Pirates (8-3). This time, Mead trailed the second game 10-3 before rallying. Tammy Jones had eight digs and three aces for Rogers.

Carlin Oeljen’s 13 kills, 10 digs and seven blocks helped visiting Lewis and Clark (8-3) outlast Central Valley 16-14, 13-15, 16-14, 15-11 and tie Rogers for third place.

LC came from behind to win the first game and led the fourth 14-2 before the Bears (3-8) rallied. Alix Miller had 17 digs and Rikki Jackson 12 digs and three blocks for CV.

Michelle Etter had three aces in the first game and served the final three points of the match as Shadle Park (4-8) beat visiting University (0-12) 15-8, 15-11, 9-15, 15-12.

Jen Williams had 15 kills and four blocks and Gonzaga Prep (6-5) came back from a 15-14 first-game deficit to beat visiting North Central 17-15, 17-15, 15-6.

Sarah Menard of the Indians (2-9) had 18 kills and 14 digs.

GSL girls soccer

Megan Cummings scored three goals and added an assist as visiting Ferris (6-4-0, 2-1) beat Shadle 4-1.

On a pair of unassisted goals, Cummings carried the ball past defenders then turned and shot from 20 yards. Shelly Giesa scored at 54 minutes for the Highlanders (4-4-0, 2-1).

Marisa Jenkins scored twice to lead G-Prep (7-4-0, 3-1) over visiting Rogers 4-0. Goalkeeper Angie Vulcano of the Pirates (2-10-0, 0-4) injured her ankle in the second half and was taken to a hospital for emergency treatment.

Jenny Frazier and Katrina Morton scored second-half goals to lead Mead (10-0-0, 3-0) to a 2-0 win over visiting CV (5-5-1, 1-3). Kellie Leaf’s pass from the corner set up Frazier’s goal. Morton scored moments after hitting the post from 25 yards.

Meghan MacKenzie had a goal and two assists in the first 20 minutes to launch LC (3-5-0, 3-1) toward a 9-1 win over NC (1-8-0, 1-3) at Hart Field.

Jessica Dineen added two goals and an assist, and Jessica Fransen two goals for the Tigers. Jennifer Weber scored at 53 minutes for the Indians (1-8-0, 1-3).

Women’s soccer

Holly Vanwert scored twice to lead first-place Community Colleges of Spokane (9-1-2, 7-0-1) to a 3-0 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges win at Walla Walla CC.

On her first goal, at 20 minutes, Vanwert stole the ball from the center defender and drove past two defenders for a 10-yard shot.

College volleyball

Jenni Rosselli’s 11 kills and 11 blocks guided visiting CCS (5-0) to a 15-9, 15-9, 11-15, 15-10 NWAACC win over Columbia Basin at Pasco. JoEne Heimbigner added 29 assists and Tiffany Moore 20 digs for the Sasquatch.

Golf

Spokane’s Gary Holt carded a 3-under-par 69 for a 216 total and a second-place tie among net prize winners at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association men’s mid-amateur tournament at Gig Harbor, Wash.
