Booklet Give Tips On Checking Home Electrical System

Winter is naturally the season of the highest number of home fires because it’s when we burn in our fireplaces and turn on heating systems, space heaters and holiday decorations.

Before cranking up the heat, do a safety check of your home. To that end, there’s a booklet available: “A Home Electrical Safety Check.” For a copy, send your name and address and 50 cents to Consumer Information Center, Dept. 366C, Pueblo, CO, 81009, and ask for Item 388C.

Your postal carrier thanks you

Just in case you think you don’t get enough mail-order catalogs, there’s a new book on the market with lists of wholesale mail-order businesses.

“The Wholesale-by-Mail Catalog 1997: The Consumer’s Bible to Shopping by Mail, Phone or Online,” includes nearly 600 companies divided by categories ranging from animal supplies, art material and crafts, to health, home, medicine and music.

It’s the 19th printing of the guide. However, those who shop by mail to save money will need to do a bunch of shopping to recoup the $18 spent on this book. The ISBN: 0-06-273339-7.

Ready for winter

Nearly 500 Spokane vehicles are now ready for the winter season, thanks to the fourth annual Car Care Fair held last weekend at Shadle Center.

The belts, hoses, fluids and emissions of 478 vehicles were checked for free, and any burned-out light bulbs were replaced, also for free, as part of the Automotive Service Association’s “Lights On” program.

Kudos to all who were involved in staging this event.

Ribbit, ribbit

We know that to consider a plastic frog a security device would be a stretch. But, undaunted, an Oregon company touts Mr. Bud, the Wonder Frog, something of an intruder alert.

The 10-inch frog croaks four times and is prompted by any motion within 15 feet.

Mr. Bud is $19.95 plus $4 shipping and runs on two AA batteries. For ordering information: (800) 365-9360.
