Gsl At A Glance

LC 16, Shadle Park 7

Key play

The Tigers lost their quarterback and the defense had just given up the go-ahead touchdown 21 seconds before halftime. Then Pete Flatt picked up the Highlanders’ squib kick on his 15, squirted up the middle and cut to his left, racing down the sideline for a TD that returned the momentum to LC.

Star of the game

LC had plenty, including sophomore Derek Johnson, who came in and didn’t make any mistakes at quarterback. But it was the defense that shined, led by Jesse Middleton, a sophomore subbing for a potential all-leaguer at linebacker, who gets the nod.

Notable

LC (4-1, 4-1) played without linebacker Andy Allen, who missed the game for disciplinary reasons, No. 1 running back Josh Bankston missed his second straight game with an ankle injury and quarterback Brian Agnew went out late in the first quarter with a dislocated ankle. Agnew underwent surgery after the game. … The Tigers went almost two quarters without a first down before a facemask penalty on Shadle (2-2, 2-3) started a 68-yard drive that resulted in an 18-yard TD pass from sophomore tailback Flatt to Luke Bowman early in the fourth quarter. … Bowman stopped the Highlanders’ next possession with a spectacular interception on the LC 22. … Flatt’s pass was the only throw by the Tigers after Agnew went out… . Shadle’s Jeff Lafferty rushed for 120 yards but only 21 in the second half.

G-Prep 13, Rogers 3

Key play

After struggling through the first half, Prep started the third quarter with a nice drive that stalled on the Rogers 19. Two plays later, however, Jason Francis came up with a fumble recovery at the Pirates 20 and the Bullpups scored in two plays.

Star of the game

Getting shut down completely in the first half didn’t frustrated Prep running back Tyson Thielman, who went for 126 of his 147 yards in the second half.

Notable

Prep (3-1, 3-2) had three first downs in the first half, but Thielman picked up three in a row to open the third quarter. Thielman picked up 45 yards on the three carries. … Prep’s only completed pass in the first half was a 43-yarder from Kevin O’Connell to Ryan Turner that set up McConnell’s 15-yard scoring run on the next play… . Prep’s TD was crucial because it came on the series after Rogers (1-4, 1-4) took a 3-0 lead.
