Hot Pick

FRIDAY, OCT. 11, 1996

There’s something about Tom Hanks that elicits politeness. He comes across as such a decent guy that it’s hard to find fault with anything he does. And politeness is as good a response to his first writer-director-star effort, “That Thing You Do,” as anything else. For while it may not be an auspicious debut, the film is a sweet-natured study that boasts the same overall quality as its title song: It’s snappy. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Photo
