Running Waters Gives W-C Upset

Joel Waters rushed for 295 yards on 23 carries Thursday as visiting Wilbur-Creston scored the biggest Class B football upset of the year, beating third-ranked Reardan 36-14 in the Northeast B-11.

Waters scored on three runs of 61 yards or longer. Mike Samuels added a 14-yard interception return for a TD after W-C’s 21-0 lead was trimmed to 21-14 after three quarters.

The Wildcats (3-2, 2-2) held Reardan (4-1, 2-1) to less than 100 yards in total offense.

Cross country

East Valley’s boys and girls recorded sweeps during their Frontier League debuts.

The EV girls, two-time defending State AA champions, took the top five positions in wins over Clarkston and host Riverside at Bear Lake.

The EV boys picked off six of the top 11 spots - although none in the top three - during their double win.

Ann Marie Adams led EV’s girls with a time of 19 minutes, 30 seconds for 3 miles. Teammates Cara Smith (19:35) and Angie Simmers (19:37) were right behind. Riverside (3-1) beat Clarkston (0-4), topped by seventh-place Makayla Gabel.

Jon Ashcraft of Riverside (3-1) ran 16:02 to break the 15-year-old course record by 14 seconds. Paul Abernathy of Clarkston (1-3) led the first half. Fourth-place Dustin Sletner (16:48) had EV’s top time.

West Valley’s teams (both 3-0) are alone in first place after wins at Pullman. Clayton Holmes led the Eagles boys with a 16:34 for 3 miles, 20 seconds up on teammate Sean McLachlan. Tim Harding (17:48) of the Greyhounds (1-2) was third. WV’s Jessica Riehle (20:04) beat runner-up Eryn Cook of Pullman (0-3) by 1:04.

Both of Colville’s teams beat visiting Cheney on the 3-mile course. Champion Kory Sullivan (16:31) and runner-up Skyler Johnson (16:35) led Colville’s boys (1-2) while R.W. Pegay (17:23) took third for Cheney (0-3). Jeannette Zimmer (18:48) of Cheney (1-2) won the girls race, but the next three spots went to Colville (2-1), topped by Crystal Evans (19:13).

Frontier girls soccer

Dawn Salfer’s trio of one-touch goals led WV (7-3-1, 7-2-0, 21 points) to a 3-0 win over visiting Deer Park/Riverside (8-1-0, 7-1-0) and a tie for first place.

WV lost to DP/R 4-0 the first time they played. DP/R avoided the shutout on Tracy Koesel’s goal at 76 minutes.

Third-place EV (7-3-1, 6-2-1, 19) kept pace as Kristina Manchester assisted on two goals and added a late score on a one-on-one play during a 3-0 win over visiting Clarkston (0-8-1).

Manchester’s second assist came on a corner kick to Annette Thomas.

Amanda Krogh scored twice and Nicole Hillyard added a score on a breakaway as visiting Cheney (5-5-1, 5-3-1, 16) beat Colville 4-1.

Kdee Anderson added one goal and one assist for the Blackhawks. Stacy McConnell scored on a breakaway for the Indians (2-8-0, 2-7-0, 5).

Sara Sauer and Sarah Chandler scored late goals as Pullman (3-4-2, 3-3-2, 11) rallied for a 3-2 win over visiting Medical Lake (2-8-1, 2-6-1, 7).

Jennifer Meader’s goal off a penalty kick, less than 3 minutes after Judy Duckett’s score at 60 minutes, put ML ahead 2-1.

Frontier volleyball

Christie Grochowski had four of her eight kills in the third game as first-place EV (7-0) beat visiting West Valley 15-6, 15-3, 15-4.

Deb Asbury had four kills and three aces in the opening game, and Jenny Kann had three aces and three kills in the middle game for the Knights. The Eagles (1-6) reported no statistics.

Leah Wilde’s five kills, four aces and five blocks guided second-place Pullman (6-1) to a 15-3, 15-12, 15-9 win at Riverside. Tiffany McMurphy of the Rams (0-7) had five digs and three kills.
